Keeping Home Warm: One Veteran’s Story

In September 1963, just a few months after graduating from high school, one Pancakes For Roger grant recipient enlisted in the U.S. Army. When asked about his preferred duty stations, he requested California and Hawaii, but the Army had other plans. He was sent to Alaska for what became an 18-month tour that turned into something much more meaningful.

“I loved it there,” he shared. “I even extended my service by six months and would have reenlisted for six years if they had let me stay in Alaska for two more.” Though the Army couldn’t grant that request, his time in Alaska left a lasting impression and a deep sense of appreciation for the experience and the people he served alongside.

Now back home in New Hampshire, he continues to embody that same spirit of gratitude and perseverance. With the help of a Pancakes for Roger grant, he and his wife were able to make critical home repairs that will help keep their home safe and comfortable.

“We finally turned on the furnace for the first time on Friday the 24th,” he shared. That simple moment carried with it a deep sense of relief and gratitude for the support that made it possible.

His story reminds us that service to our country is lifelong, and that coming together to support Veterans in need strengthens the communities we share.
