Adolph Heyward answered the call to serve in 1967 when his father took him to the draft office. He boarded a bus that same day and entered military service with pride. During his two years in uniform, he developed the discipline and respect for authority that became cornerstones of his life. He often reflects on how much he learned from the sergeants who shaped him during those formative years.
After leaving the military, Adolph spent more than three decades as a truck driver. The discipline and situational awareness he learned in service helped him succeed in a demanding profession.
As he grew older, mobility challenges made daily living increasingly difficult for both him and his wife. Their bathroom was no longer safe or accessible, and simple movements carried real risk of injury. Through a grant from Pancakes for Roger, and in partnership with the Veterans nonprofit Vets Helping Vets, Adolph received essential home modifications that improved his safety, comfort, and independence.
Handrails were installed throughout the house to support stable movement. His bathroom was fully renovated to create an accessible space he calls beautiful. Flooring repairs eliminated slipping hazards caused by water drips. These modifications transformed his home environment and restored peace of mind for both him and his wife.
This project reflects the mission of Pancakes for Roger to create pathways that improve the lives of Veterans and their communities. For Adolph, it means living safely and confidently in the place he calls home.
