Navy Veteran Breathes Easier With Support
When one Pancakes for Roger grant recipient enlisted in the U.S. Navy at 19, she was searching for direction and purpose. College wasn’t the right fit, and she wanted to do something meaningful. The structure and discipline of military life gave her exactly that. Serving from 1986 to 1991, her time in uniform shaped the person she is today.
While stationed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, she experienced a moment that would stay with her forever. One evening at the bowling alley, every television switched from regular programming to coverage of Operation Desert Shield turning into Desert Storm. The entire room went silent as the weight of that moment sank in.“Everyone just left,”she recalled.“It was a surreal feeling.”She finished her enlistment supporting fleet readiness, and her confidence grew as she mastered new skills and learned the meaning of camaraderie, respect, and purpose.
After leaving the Navy, she married and followed her then-husband’s military career as an Explosive Ordnance Diver, moving every few years. Along the way, she earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a minor in social work. Her career took shape around helping others, including 18 years with Child Protective Services in New Jersey and later roles supporting Veterans, ex-felons, and those facing homelessness. Today, she works as an employment specialist helping Veterans secure sustainable jobs. Each year, she also volunteers with Wreaths Across America to honor those who have served.
When unexpected medical issues and job transitions caused financial strain, she turned to the Pancakes for Roger grant program. The support helped cover rent, overdue bills, and car payments, lifting the weight of worry.“It was humbling to ask for help,” she said, “but it reinforced what I tell my clients: it’s okay to ask for help—it’s a sign of strength.”
Her story reflects a life built on service, resilience, and compassion, both in and out of uniform.
